Zoological medicine technicians Pia Oresjo Bartolini and Sarah Purcell are shown with Mr. Biff, a resident of the zoological medicine ward, on Oct. 8. Mr. Biff is a Buffon’s Macaw, an endangered species from Central and South America. He is approximately 7 years old and was relinquished by an owner after his mate passed away and the owner was concerned about him living alone. He is now an ambassador for his species in zoo med. Veterinary care manager Danielle Shmalberg strokes Nathalia, a Saluki that was rescued from Qatar and has been receiving rehabilitative therapy at UF. Nathalia still needs surgery and a rescue group has been raising funds to assist in her care. Shmalberg is a representative of the group and helped procure treatment for Nathalia at UF.
