SCAVMA announces Appreciation Award winners for February, March

The Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association has announced its monthly appreciation award winners for February and March.

February’s winner was Inez Ellerbe, a member of the custodial staff.

“Inez was very appreciative of the award and told us that making students smile made her day,” said Jacob Vencil, SCAVMA vice president and a member of the Class of 2013.

“After all the years I’ve been here, it feels so good to know you guys thought of me,” Ellerbe told the students upon receipt of her award.

Student Lacy Gilmer added, “Inez is always there with a smile on her face, cleaning up in the small animal hospital and brightening up the hallways with her laughter. You never catch her in a bad mood and she is always ready to stop and chat about life.”

Gilmer added, “Her commitment to her job and the joy she experiences while performing often thankless tasks makes her the perfect recipient of the award.”

The March winner was Debi Matlack, a radiology technician.

“Debi always finds a way to have fun while helping us better understand radiology and feel more comfortable once we get to clinics,” said Brittany Bell, a member of the Class of 2013. “I think she goes beyond the call of duty to make a dull subject entertaining and to make us all feel like we are part of a veterinary family, simply by sharing stories and jokes.”

Matlack said she was “completely floored” when she learned she had received the award.

“I haven’t been able to wipe the smile off my face,” she said. “It means to much to me that the students feel I am helpful to them, and I’m so grateful that they feel that way.”
