UF Veterinary Hospital clinicians to offer pet health care tips on new radio show
By Sarah Carey
Animal Airwaves–Live, a call-in radio show that will feature experts from the UF Veterinary Hospitals speaking on a variety of animal health-related topics, kicks off April 2 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on local public radio station WUFT-FM, 89.1.
The show will be hosted by Dana Hill of WUFT, and will feature UF faculty clinicians, who will speak about common veterinary problems in their area of expertise. Listeners will be able to call in with questions related to the topic being discussed.
First up will be Dr. Michael Schaer, professor of emergency medicine and critical care, whose topic will be “Animal ER: From Heat Stroke to Snake Bites.” Listeners will be able to learn more about what constitutes an emergency for their pet and how experts at the UF Veterinary Hospitals handle these situations 24-7.
The following Saturday, on April 9, Dr. Ali Morton, assistant professor of large animal surgery, will discuss equine lameness and how this problem is defined, diagnosed and treated in horses.
Dr. Herb Maisenbacher, a lecturer in veterinary cardiology, will talk about heart conditions in pets on April 16. On April 23, Dr. Rosanna Marsella, a professor of veterinary dermatology, will discuss skin problems in dogs and cats, and on April 30, Dr. Amy Stone, a clinical assistant professor who works in primary care and dentistry, will address the importance of good dental health in small animals.
Animal Airwaves began airing in late January as a series of 60-second radio segments relating to animal health. Segments air three times each day on WUFT and are downloadable and archived at www.animalairwaves.com.
Listeners who have topics they would like to see covered in either the radio spots or Animal Airwaves–Live can email animalairwaves@vetmed.ufl.edu. The number to call in questions during Animal Airwaves–Live is 352-392-8989.
