Faculty member leads national ophthalmology group

Dr. Ralph Hamor

Dr. Ralph E. Hamor, a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine, is now leading the national organization that oversees board certification and educational efforts relating to the specialty of veterinary ophthalmology.

Hamor took office in October as president of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology and will serve in that capacity until his term ends in October 2017. As president, Hamor will be in charge of running the organization, in conjunction with its governing body, the ACVO’s Board of Regents, and will preside at meetings of the board and of voting members.

“It was an honor to be nominated to serve, and in particular, to be elected to the board by the membership in 2012,” Hamor said. “My primary reward is, hopefully, to be an effective regent, officer and president, which would allow me to serve the members of the organization. I hope to have left a positive impact.”

An active member of the organization since 1994, when he became board-certified in veterinary ophthalmology, Hamor has served on the organization’s credentials, residency and examination committees. A graduate of the University of Missouri’s School of Veterinary Medicine, he completed his residency and a master’s degree in comparative ophthalmology at Colorado State University in 1993.

Hamor joined the UF veterinary college’s department of small animal clinical sciences in April 2016. Prior to that, he was a clinical professor and ophthalmology section head at the University of Illinois, where he had been a faculty member since 1993.
