Members of the UF Wildlife and Aquatic Veterinary Disease Laboratory recently made a splash at four national and international aquatic animal health conferences.

The group participated in the 48th International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine in Cancun, Mexico, the 4th International Ranavirus Symposium and the 10th International Symposium on Viruses of Lower Vertebrates both in Budapest, Hungary, and the 147th American Fisheries Society Meeting in Tampa, Florida.

Faculty, staff and students associated with the laboratory gave 17 presentations covering diseases of ornamental fishes, amphibians and marine mammals. Lab members were able to interact and network with researchers from more than 20 countries around the world, in addition to enjoying the local sights and flavors.

Laboratory members won travel grants from the UF Graduate Studies Committee and the Veterinary Graduate Student Association, as well as from the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture.

During the joint meetings in Hungary, both of which he served as keynote speaker, Dr. Tom Waltzek, an assistant professor in the college’s department of infectious diseases and immunology and the laboratory’s director, received the Global Ranavirus Consortium’s Outstanding Service Award.
