Student wins 3rd place in national essay competition
Polly Weldon, a member of the college’s Class of 2022, has won third place in the annual J. Fred Smithcors Veterinary History Essay Contest.
Sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical History Society, the contest was established in 1991. According to the society’s website, the contest provides a unique opportunity for veterinary students to learn about the heritage of their new profession by researching and writing about a veterinary history topic of their choice.
Weldon’s essay focused on the role of Dr. Tracey McNamara, a veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, who helped discover the 2001 West Nile virus outbreak in New York.
“I love reading veterinary history, and when I heard about this competition, I knew I wanted to write about Dr. McNamara,” Weldon said.
McNamara’s story is one of her favorites, Weldon said, “because it demonstrates the vital role that veterinarians play in the One Health initiative, and how the knowledge of animal disease patterns can help prevent human epidemics.”
