Student receives award from national journal for manuscript
Molly R. Cohen, a third-year veterinary student at UF, has been honored by the American Journal of Veterinary Research for a manuscript she prepared as part of the Linda J. Hayward Florida Veterinary Scholars Program.
Cohen received the 2023 Outstanding AJVR Student Manuscript Award for her manuscript, “Endoscopic application of fibrin glue may be a feasible method of treatment for postintubation tracheal lacerations in cats.” Her award, along with other student winners from around the country, was announced at the 2023 annual meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association this past summer.
Cohen’s faculty mentor was Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell, a clinical assistant professor of surgical oncology at UFCVM.
“Through my participation in FVSP, I was paired with Dr. Maxwell, who had previously formulated the topic for this research,” Cohen said. “I was intrigued by her ideas, and how innovative the project was.”
She said the study findings revealed that fibrin glue, when applied endoscopically and in a filling fashion, or from deep to superficial, is a minimally invasive and fairly quick sealing method for postintubation tracheal laceration in cats.
“In certain patients, fibrin glue could take the place of conservative management or even thoracic surgery,” Cohen said.
