Statue honoring “Honey” and all service dogs unveiled outside UF Small Animal Hospital
On the morning of Saturday, Dec. 9, a ceremony was held outside the UF Small Animal Hospital to unveil a bronze monument funded by private donors in honor of Honey, a certified medical service dog who provided life-saving support to her now-deceased owner, Michael Gaither, a veteran from Chiefland, Florida, for many years.
The statue was commissioned by Barbara Snow, executive director of the U.S. War Dogs Association. Honey, who passed away in March of 2018, had been a patient at UF, treated for two separate diseases. A group of about 30 people were present for the statue’s unveiling and remarks were given by Snow and others, including Dr. Darcy Adin, a clinical professor and assistant dean for clinical services/small animal.
The statue is meant to honor all service dogs.
