Dr. Mike Walsh, Suzanna Mickey and Shae Kelliher of the UF Marine Animal Rescue team recently led a training session for new students interested in aquatics through the Aquatic Animal Health club, with the support of Brittany Barbeau from the UF Aquatic Animal Health Program.

“The annual training is an opportunity for UFMAR to show how the group responds to rescues of cetaceans, manatees and sea turtles,” said Walsh.

The club organized the morning and about 20 students helped set up scenarios of rescuing dolphins, manatees and sea turtles. After each rescue group was involved, the large plush manatee and blow-up dolphins were transferred to a medical tent where Dr. Walsh reviewed how the animals are monitored during rescue or a health evaluation.
